Social media has many people running around with blindfolds on.
The fast growing Twitter is gaining new users daily and many Tweeters seem only to be concerned about the number of followers they can accumulate. Most Tweeters are not even concerned who their followers are and don't even check out their Twitter site. When weeding through my Twitter accounts, yes I have many of them for myself, clients, and for market testing, I tend to automatically not follow those with API feeds. These normally weeds out 10-20% of my new followers. Then I work on those who tweet more than 6 times per day another 10-20%. And the last ones to work through are those who are compatible to what my Twitter account is relative with, another 10-20%. If a tweeter is following substantially more Tweeters than is following them, this is a warning that they may be setting you up for spam marketing. This weekend I did add a whole group of Tweeters via tweetML which allows you to select a group of followers. You'll also notice that Twitter will be adding their own twist to this on our accounts. The Twitter List is currently in Beta with only a few selected Tweeters. The list will allow you to manage your followers as groups. When using Twitter for marketing I look to see how compatible the user is. Would they use the product or service? Are they marketing something similar? Age group? Can I benefit from their tweets? During the past week Google and MSN has announced they will both be adding live Twitter feeds to their searches. So, if you're not using Twitter as a marketing tool, it is time to warm up to it.
